Last night at a sold-out @LPRnyc:
Bergen, Norway sophisticated pop singer-songwriter @SondreLerche(whom I interviewed for @BigTakeoverMag in 2007) has been so prolifically forward-looking since debuting in 2001 as a 19-year-old wunderkind of snappy literate indie guitar pop, à la Roddy Frame (Aztec Camera), with 10 stylistically diverse original studio LPs, including his pinnacle (so far) 2022's Avatars of Love, many EPs and remixes, and exhilarating marathon live shows, that it would seem innate for him to eschew the music industry trend to repackage the past in pre-silver anniversary sentimentality, but as a key Avatars track acknowledges, "turns out [he's] sentimental after all."

Review: QQQ
One potential hazard of fusing two musical styles is that you can end up with a fence-sitting hybrid—a compromise that satisfies neither camp. QQQ avoids this trap on its debut, Unpacking the Trailer..., a peculiar yet glowingly warm effort, which combines chamber-music intricacy with folksy twang. The disc finds the all-instrumental local quartet—violist Beth Meyers, guitarist Monica Mugan, percussionist Jason Treuting and fiddler Dan Trueman—offsetting an occasionally monotonous timbral palette with inventive and heartfelt compositions.

It was a year of surprises in classical world
i am not; Janus Trio (New Amsterdam)
An exquisite debut CD, "i am not" is full of lush, intricate new music that is easily accessible but stands up well to repeat listening. The trio features Amanda Baker on flutes, Beth Meyers on viola and banjo and Nuiko Wadden on harp; each also sings and plays percussion. The well-curated slate of composers includes Caleb Burhans, Angelica Negron and Jason Treuting of So Percussion.

Damsel
"The surface of a Damsel song may be sweet and sonorous, but what's going on under the surface is more often than not spiked and steely. That's just one reason I love this CD."
